What is Star schema?

A star schema is a way of organizing analytical data into fact tables, which record events such as orders or payments, and dimension tables, which describe the things those events involve, such as customers, products, dates and regions.

How it works.

The name comes from the shape: one fact table in the middle, joined to the dimension tables around it. Measures such as quantity or amount live in the fact table, and questions are answered by summing them and grouping by attributes of the dimensions.

Why it matters.

Star schemas keep joins simple and predictable, which makes queries easier to write correctly and easier to check.

How Corlogic uses it.

StarEngine organizes relevant warehouse data into a governed star model of facts, dimensions, relationships and business definitions. The example on the platform page connects orders with customer, product, date and region dimensions.
